PIANIST | MUSIC THEORIST

A classical pianist, Dr. Ting-Yu Liu is an active solo performer and music theorist. She has been praised for the “various timbral nuances, sensitivity and artistry of her performance.” Her repertoire encompasses works from the Baroque era to 21st-century music. Ting-Yu holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Oregon, with a current Master of Arts degree in music theory. She received her Master of Music degree in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance from National Tsing Hua University. As an active performer, Ting-Yu has performed solo recitals and concert series including the Liszt Birthday Celebration Concert by The American Liszt Society, the Laureate Gala at Carnegie Hall-Weill Recital Hall, etc. During her time at the University of Oregon, Ting-Yu developed an interest in music theory. Her thesis, “Discussion of Schumann’s Musical Characterization in Carnaval Op. 9” focused on piano music with Schenkerian analysis. Dr. Liu's doctoral lecture document “Ravel’s Water Music: Jeux d’eau, Une barque sur l’ocean, and Ondine”, discusses Ravel's stylistic approach from multiple perspectives: timbre, harmony, rhythm and textural characteristics in his three water pieces.
